We know that many individuals considering suicide don’t seek help for various reasons. Others may feel that it is impossible for anyone to truly understand their anguish having never experienced such pain. We do understand and we want to help. Other common reasons men and women with suicidal ideation or intent rarely pursue help include:

  • They don’t want to share their thoughts or intentions with others for fear of being judged or blamed for having a flaw in their makeup.
  • Combined with the sense of hopelessness, they have a hard time coping and have no idea where to turn for help
  • They believe asking for help is a sign of weakness
  • They believe if others know their thoughts or intentions, they’ll be seen as cowards

Our empathic staff will listen to you and provide the best help and guidance the can for your specific experiences.

The experiences of individuals with suicidal thoughts and feelings differ. These feelings are rarely caused by a single event, but rather a culmination of long-term overpowering life stressors and events. We all want to predict as much as possible, exercise control and manage life’s outcomes. When we feel unable to do these things, we may stop trying to alter our life’s course. This leads to feelings of helplessness, and in turn, despondency and great suffering.

In order to best manage your thoughts or intent, your doctor or therapist may recommend treatment at our hospital. We provide a safe environment to explore painful topics and additional facets you may uncover as you begin your journey towards recovery. Types of Treatment

Types of suicidal ideations treatment offered at Riverwoods Behavioral Health System near Atlanta, GA

We have a number of treatment options available at our hospital near Atlanta, Georgia to help relieve the agony that can lead to suicidal ideation. The treatment options we use may include medications and different types of therapies based on your initial evaluation. Medications may be used at the beginning of treatment in order to decrease symptoms, better enabling you to engage in the therapeutic process. Many people can reduce their medications as they learn new coping strategies to handle stresses in life.

Individual therapy works to address unique personal issues related to the thoughts, feelings, and behaviorism as well as any co-occurring disorders which may be present; two major types of therapies we employ are CBT and DBT.

Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT) is considered the most effective type of psychotherapy for those who have suicidal thoughts and behaviors. CBT addresses distortions in thinking, teaching you to challenge negative thoughts and replace them with more appropriate ways of evaluating the world.

Dialectical Behavior therapy (DBT) is used to help regulate negative mood states and change problem behaviors. DBT is focused upon improving interpersonal effectiveness for dealing with crises, increasing tolerance for negative emotions, and helping you learn to focus on the present while coping with your thoughts and emotions.

Group therapy is another common type of therapy we utilize. You may attend process groups related to a common theme, co-occurring problems, self-harm or risk factors for suicide attempts. Psycho-educational groups are used to teach information about medications, common symptoms of depression and other disorders that co-occur with suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and the ways in which suicidal ideation and attempts affect the family. Other groups may be skills-based, focusing on skills such as learning to re-enter social situations, stress management, assertiveness skills, and learning to understand the risk factors that trigger thoughts of suicide and relapse prevention.

Family therapy is another key component for recovery at our facility. Family sessions are used to address topics such as what life will be like for the individual after discharge, safety measures and fall back plans, triggers for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and potential obstacles to continued well- being. We also educate loved ones about mental health and suicidal ideation, showcase types of treatments for recovery, and help loved ones process their own issues and emotions related to suicidal ideation. Additionally, we help connect family members to appropriate support in their area and community resources that they can utilize to better cope with their loved one’s symptoms.

Our hospital also uses experiential methods to help work through suicidal ideation and co-occurring problems in ways outside of traditional therapeutic modalities. This include:

  • Creative Expression
  • Daily recreational activities
  • Horticulture Therapy
  • Nutrition
  • Health based groups

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for suicidal ideations

Once you and your treatment team have concluded that you are ready to be discharged to another type of treatment option, you will collaborate on a discharge plan. If you are not ready to leave the support of a hospital setting, but no longer require intensive treatment, a residential facility may be appropriate. Many people utilize our step-down programs to continue to work on remaining issues and difficulties. These include our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). These two treatment options differ primarily on the number of hours a day during which services are provided.

Providing different levels of care in our treatment facility makes it easier for patients to move to the next step towards healing. This makes for a smooth transition without the need to adjust to the idea of moving to a different facility. Our goal is to ensure continuity of care.

No one should live in misery. Don’t let suicidal thoughts get in the way of living life to the fullest. There are effective treatments available to help you enjoy your life again and to experience the happiness you deserve. If you or someone you love is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please call our treatment facility near Atlanta, Georgia to talk to a trained professional about treatment options.
