About Our Women’s Inpatient Trauma Program
Our inpatient trauma program serves women age 18 and older who are suffering from the effects of trauma. In this program, our team can also care for women who are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personal and professional stress, and grief and loss. A typical stay in our facility near Atlanta, Georgia, is five to seven days, but the length will vary depending on a person’s specific needs and the progress they make.
Taking part in a program for women only can help create a greater feeling of safety and camaraderie. It also allows our team of mental health professionals to address trauma and its related symptoms in the ways they specifically affect women.
Women & Trauma
Our team in Riverdale, Georgia, brings specialized knowledge and experience working with women who are living with the effects of trauma.
According to the National Center for PTSD, about half of women will be exposed to at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, and their risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result is two to three times higher compared with men. Women’s experiences of trauma and PTSD also differ from those of men in some significant ways. For example, women are more likely to cope by seeking social support and forming emotional attachments. An upside is that women have been shown to experience a greater reduction in PTSD symptoms through psychotherapy compared with men.
A specific event may precipitate the negative health effects of trauma in women, such as being the victim of or witnessing a violent crime, the sudden or violent death of a loved one, firsthand or secondhand exposure to military combat, a serious accident, or a natural disaster. These experiences can profoundly affect cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning.
When it comes to anxiety and depression, most forms affect women at twice the rate of men. Research is still seeking to understand whether this difference is driven more by physical variations in the brain, social and societal differences, or some combination of these. PTSD and other mental health disorders can coincide with hormonal changes, such as those women experience during puberty, during pregnancy, after giving birth, and leading up to menopause.

Therapies & Services
At our hospital near Atlanta, Georgia, we use proven methods of care to help you learn ways to cope with symptoms of PTSD and begin to heal from the effects of trauma.
PTSD can feel overwhelming, affecting your ability to think clearly, make decisions, sleep, eat, and function properly. At our facility near Atlanta, Georgia, we’re ready to help you find the strength deep inside you so that you can learn to live a life that is not controlled by the effects of trauma.
We understand that PTSD can happen to anyone who has gone through an event so traumatic that it overwhelms their ability to cope. It is not exclusive to those who have served in the military, nor is it a character flaw or weakness. You are simply a normal person reacting to a highly abnormal situation.
To support women in this program, we employ trauma-informed therapy, a framework that acknowledges and addresses the impact of traumatic experiences on someone’s life. By addressing the root causes of the symptoms a person is experiencing, trauma-informed therapy fosters healing and resilience in a safe, supportive environment. Within this framework, we may recommend cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma narrative therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), depending on a person’s needs.
Group therapy is a key aspect of care for women in our trauma program. Research shows that group CBT can be effective in treating those who are suffering from PTSD. At Riverwoods Behavioral Health, group therapy sessions are led daily by a master’s-level clinician. Topics covered in group therapy may include coping skills, relapse prevention, discharge planning, conflict resolution, healthy boundaries, and effective communication. In addition to group therapy, individual and family therapy sessions are provided as needed.
In our women’s inpatient trauma program in Riverdale, Georgia, we offer medication management services. A nurse practitioner administers medication and monitors its effects. You may meet with a psychiatrist upon admission and again as needed. However, please note that the program does not include medical care and is not a detoxification program.
